take action: PetA

Investigate Horse-Racing Cruelty

Thank you for calling for hearings on the treatment of thoroughbreds in the horse-racing industry. We urge you to question trainers, owners, veterinarians, jockeys, grooms, and other racing insiders about the treatment of horses and to draft legislation that would do the following:

1. Crack down on drug use. Ban the use of steroids entirely and ban the use of legal drugs in the week prior to a race. Strengthen penalties for the use of illegal drugs.

2.  Delay training and racing until after a horse's third birthday. Before reaching this age, the animals' legs are not fully developed, which increases the chances for injury.

3. Eliminate racing on dirt surfaces. Synthetic track surfaces - such as the surfaces used at Keeneland and all California race courses - are safer for horses and have led to a dramatic decrease in breakdowns.

4. Limit the number of races per season. Even Triple Crown racers who have light schedules leading up to the Derby break down under the strain. Horses who race on smaller tracks are often run so frequently that strains and breaks are inevitable.

5. Ban whipping. Injured horses who are mercilessly whipped by jockeys will keep running until their legs shatter completely.

These improvements are a matter of life and death for horses.

Take action now and do something for the cause.
